Using the VAT Rules to Your Advantage

There are many situations where the VAT rules seem to be offer businesses an advantage but, in reality, the business can pay less VAT or improve cashflow by arranging their VAT affairs in a different way. This is particularly true for charities and community interest companies.

How we helped our client
A charity client’s income was exempt from VAT and they were about to incur large capital expenditure on which the VAT element would not be recoverable. EQ were asked for our advice on whether there were any options available to recover the input VAT and, in turn, improve the client’s finances. We explained the rules for VAT exemption and circumstances in which this exemption would not be applicable. We then prepared a document for our client which detailed the changes that could be implemented to recover the VAT as well as the impact on the client’s future VAT affairs.
