R&D – A Changing Landscape

Over the last 10 years, there has been a rise in the number of R&D boutiques and whilst there are undoubtedly some highly credible providers, equally there are those who are simply giving advice with the sole objective of generating a large fee.

In the past year, our R&D team have noticed a change in the attitude of HMRC. They are now seeking to tighten their interpretation of what qualifies for R&D, similar to their stance adopted many years ago.  With over 100 extra advisers now charged with the task of reviewing and enquiring into tax returns, along with delays in processing R&D repayments, there is no doubt we have had it too easy for too long and the landscape has changed.

At EQ, we believe that the bar has been raised regarding the level of claim which HMRC expect.  There’s no doubt that some ‘marginal’ claims that have previously been successful will not be allowed to continue.  We have an excellent track record of successful claims and as a firm of Chartered Accountants, regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and the Chartered Institute of Taxation, we place great store in the completeness of our work.

Whoever you use for your R&D support, make sure your claim is robust and ask yourself “if I was sitting across the table from HMRC, would I be happy to stand behind my R&D claim?”

Our R&D team prepare numerous claims per year and have the expertise and knowledge to ensure that your claims are thorough and well considered. If you would like to discuss your own circumstances, please contact our R&D Taxperts or for more information, visit our R&D page.
